Beach House (BH) is an intentional community first organized in December 1979 to provide support and rehabilitation to adults who have been severely disabled due to serious and persistent mental illness. This intentional community is a prevocational psychiatric rehabilitation program anchored in the philosophically based conceptual framework of the Clubhouse Model of Psychiatric Rehabilitation. This model is defined by the International Standards of Clubhouse Programs. The standards also serve as a “bill of rights” for members and a code of ethics for staff, board and administrators.

Services: Case Management serves consumers with diagnoses of mental illness and/or substance use disorders who need assistance to identify and use resources that will promote their highest level of functioning. Case Management assists consumers to access needed medical, psychiatric, mental health, substance abuse, social, educational, vocational services and other supports essential to meeting basic needs and improve their quality of life.

Services: Adult Day Support that provides psycho-educational and skill development activities for consumers. These services help promote self-sufficiency and avoid hospitalization. Participation ranges from three to five days per week, four hours per day.

Services: Education and support group meeting for families that have a loved one who has a serious mental illness. The workshops provide education and support concerning serious mental illnesses such as Schizophrenia, Bipolar disorder, and major depression.

Office of Consumer and Family Affairs
Consumer and Family Affairs provides education classes, support groups, consultation, resource linkage and advocacy for individuals and families affected mental illness, substance use disorders and co-occurring disorders. Staff also coordinates the Virginia Beach Community Trust for individuals with mental illness.
Friends and Family Education is a series of six classes that provide education about substance use disorders, how substance addiction affects families, and community resource information. The goal is to offer information/tools that family members affected by a loved one’s addiction can consider using so that they do not remain trapped in the emotional chaos of addiction. NAMI Family to Family is a series of twelve classes, offered in collaboration with NAMI Virginia Beach, designed to provide education on mental illness and to reduce the stress that can occur when parents, siblings, spouses, and other relatives and friends support an individual with mental illness. Registration required. No residency requirement, no fee. Call 757- 385 0802.
WRAP (Wellness Recovery Action Plan) classes are for people with mental illness, substance use disorders, and co-occurring disorders. WRAP focuses on wellness and recovery. Writing a Crisis Plan is a part of the curriculum. WRAP is offered within certain MHSA programs.
The Virginia Beach Community Trust offers the opportunity for families to set up special needs trusts for individuals with mental illness. Trusts are managed by the five member Board of Trustees and coordinated by the supervisor of the Office of Consumer and Family Affairs.

Project LINK provides intensive gender-specific case management services to pregnant, post-partum and parenting women whose lives have been affected by substance use and/or co-occurring disorder. Project LINK reduces a woman’s barriers to treatment by providing the following:
Provides emotional support and education about substance abuse and mental illness
Childcare and transportation assistance to attend treatment for mental illness, substance use or co-occurring disorders, support groups, parenting education groups, prenatal and pediatric medical appointments, and other approved appointments.
Families Together is a case management program for children aged birth through seven who are considered at risk of severe emotional disturbances due to parental/caregiver substance abuse or mental health issues
